Wow! Big roll – good thing it was a long weekend. We packed all of our camping and hiking gear in the car and did a tru-zufall by rolling the dice straight into the cup holder. We hit the road early on Saturday Morning and quickly discovered that we weren’t the only ones getting and early start. The border live up heading south was 3+ hours – but since we were dealing with driving time, it didn’t affect our final destination, just the length of our day. It gave us some time to check out the map and see where we might end up.

Rainbow FallsWe thought we might make it all the way to the Oregon/Washington border and a park called Cape Disappointment – the only disappointment was that we didn’t make it that far. We drove 4 hours south and realized we needed to get west before we ran out of drive time. We hung a right at Chehalis (which was a really funky little town where main street looked like it was stuck in 1973). The winding road took us into some nice foothills as we headed toward the coast. About 45 minutes west we came upon a state park called “Rainbow Falls” and it didn’t look over run with RV’s so we pulled in (over the falls themselves…which in my humble opinion were more like rapids…semantics).

The place was amazing – beautiful trees everywhere and only about half full. We had the luxury of picking out spot and we found one that was private, well treed and had a nice spot for the tent. So nice in fact that we decided to stay there for the whole weekend. We played bocce in the park, hiked an old wagon trail (that runs all the way from Chehalis to the coast) were we say a HUGE butterfly, snakes, and a fearless deer. A grouse came out of the bush and scared the bejeebers out of us…the horses were laughing at us. We walked along the trail well into the foothills but fell short of the full 40 miles to the coast. We also hiked into the foothills and heard the creak of the fir trees…which reminded us of the Blair Witch Project.

We picked daisies and had a marathon campfire – a fabulously relaxing camping zufall.
